Better Brick Nepal Project

Better Brick Nepal project was impemented by GoodWeave Certification Nepal from 2013 – 2023 in 40 brick kilns across 12 districts in Nepal.
The project was implemented in partnership with GFI and local NGOS, which was funded by Humanity United.

The Issue

Brick manufacturing is highly exploitative. Vulnerable workers are bonded by debt and child labor is common. Unhealthy and unsafe working conditions and lack of educational opportunities trap families in intergenerational cycles of poverty.

BBN program goal

    • Address exploitative labor practices on brick kilns and sustain change by creating a demand for a ‘Better Brick’
    • In partnership with GFI and local NGOs, funded by Humanity United

GoodWeave’s role

    • Develop and pilot-test a certification standard and verification methodology that addresses child labor, forced and bonded labor, and inhumane working conditions in participating Better Brick kilns;
    • Provide educational and remediation services for child laborers.
